Founding Fathers Of Project ManagementPosted by Jason JacksonIf you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! This is a quick guide to some of the pioneers of project management in the modern era. (When we talk about the modern era, we’re talking about the middle of the 20th century onwards. There are, obviously, many fantastic project managers from before this time – including such people as those who built the Pyramids, and many famous war and political strategists throughout human history, but we’re looking at those who contributed to project management as we know it today). 1) F. W. Taylor The “principles of scientific management” were written by Frederick Winslow Taylor in 1911. These are based on five basic elements for managing successful projects: i) You should study the nature of the project first to determine the best way of completing it. ii) Find the best person / people for the job. iii) Train this person in how best to go about doing the job. iv) Incentivise them to follow best practices. v) You need to ensure your workers are working on the project, while your managers are managing it. 2) Henry Gantt The Gantt Chart that is widely used in project management today was developed by Henry Gantt. It is a visual representation of a project plan and schedule, that looks like a horizontal bar chart. 3) Frank Gilbreth An early time and motion study pioneer, dedicated to improving the efficiency of each individual. 4) Donaldson Brown Famous for articulating various accounting principles, such as return on investment and financial forecasting, Donaldson Brown worked with the famous DuPont company in the 1920s, helping them develop their methodology for managing projects effectively and efficiently. 5) W. E. Deming Working in Japan, William Edwards Deming ensured their factory production techniques were vastly improved. He developed his fourteen “principles of management” during this time, and expanded upon them in his hugely influential book “Out of Crisis”, from 1986. 6) Joseph Juran Another American project management guru working in Japan in the second half of the twentieth century, Joseph Juran popularised the principles of “Quality Management”. One of the fundamental elements of this is to ensure there is training for everybody in the company, starting with the top level management. This idea wasn’t popular in the US at the time, and helped Japan overtake them to become a world leader in production during the 1970’s. With decades of experience behind him, Jason Jackson is an agile project management specialist. His experience ranges from the largest multinational organisations to small bespoke projects. |

10 Steps To Perfect Project ManagementPosted by Clare WestwoodAgile project management can be extremely efficient- these tips will help you get the best out of your time. One way of ensuring a system works without fault is by creating a definition of ‘done’ tasks. This helps to prevent a build up of hidden tasks such which may then build up and take a lot of time to fix later on. Use timeboxes in order to manage your work, make sure you set a start and end date for all activities and do not agree to any changes on the dates. Timeboxes that are set in stone will keep people target driven and focussed. Do not allow scheduling and buffering of any tasks as all of the safety margins will be used. Refrain from making decisions too soon, if possible even implement a ‘no decision’ option as sometimes the project will change so that a decision may become invalid or unnecessary. When possible try to reduce cycle time and keep cycles as short as possible, this will speed us the learning curve and reduce time. Always intend to limit the number of ‘work in progress’ tasks and the amount of people working side by side on a task. This improves the response time and generally speeds the process up. At the beginning of the project make sure you plan properly, this will reduce the cost of having to make changes further along the project. Put a limit in any unnecessary task changing between each project, this will mean that tasks get completed quicker and people will remain more focussed. Avoid making overtime a regular occurrence as this can result in a lack of team spirit and motivation as well as a poorer level of work. Be sure to have an idea of the differences between urgent tasks and important tasks and if you focus on urgent tasks too much you may find that the important tasks are never completed. Scrum project management is a great way to communicate about your project, project management software can help the running of a project go smoothly. |

Tips On What To Look For When Seeking ConsultantsPosted by Adriana NotonWhether you are a large or small firm, you have probably sought the counsel of a consultancy firm. If you have not yet, you will most likely need one at some point or another. Companies seek consultants to fill a gap in knowledge that exists internally. These professionals are hired on a per-project basis. Once the project is complete, the consultant is no longer on the payroll of the hiring company. Usually, a consultant has years of experience in a particular field. They know the details of a profession and use the knowledge they have to guide individuals or companies who lack in their field of expertise. They are paid to come into a complicated situation and find solutions to problems that may exist. If your company or business is facing a problem and needs a solution, you may consider a consultant when none of your internal employees are equipped to deal with the situation on hand. However, you may consider hiring a full-time employee with the experience needed to handle a reoccurring situation. A full-time employee may be the solution if you find yourself constantly facing a particular dilemma. When seeking a consultant make sure to find someone who is pragmatic, realistic, and organized. A person with these qualities will help you get your job done. Another perk for hiring a consultant will be that most consultants are up-to-date with changes in a particular field. Employees may not be as current to the changes trends. Professional fields are changing constantly. A consultant is hired because of their experience and their ability to track changing trends. This is a major benefit to hiring a consultant, you are hiring an individual, ideally, who can take whatever situation you give them and make it better. If your company plans to implement new procedures, machinery or policy, consultants may be called in to help your employees through the transition and learning phase. Companies will often bring in a consultant when they are facing a problem, but may not know what exactly this problem is. A consultant is called in to clarify any problems and offer recommendations for possible solutions. So when it is time to hire a consultant, how do you do it? The most effective way to hire a consultant is to tap into your business network. Ask professionals in your field who they have used before, and to what degree of satisfaction. Word of mouth is probably the best way to hire a consultant who will get the job done. Make sure to get the name of the individual, or individuals who worked on a particular project. This will be especially important if you are dealing with large consultancy firms. Before you actually hire consultants, make sure you meet with the people who will be working on your project. This personal contact is important in finding out what kind of fit both client and consultant have. Sometimes having the knowledge to get something done is not enough. You want a team that will get the job done without causing any rifts with your employees, which may lead to bigger problems than the one you are dealing with now. Online Consultants Can Help You Relocate To CanadaPosted by Adriana NotonIf you are planning to immigrate to Canada, it is advisable to make use of immigration services offered by experienced consultants. Even if you are just planning a visit, or want your son or daughter to attend school or university in Canada, there are certain criteria to be met. There are so many reasons why people seek citizenship in Canada. Apart from its awesome beauty and vast natural resources, the United Nations declared Canada to be the ‘best country to live in’ for 7 consecutive years. It is the 2nd largest country in the world and is America’s biggest trading partner. A Canadian passport allows citizens entry to over 20 countries without having to apply for a visa. Canada is a multi-cultural country with fantastic prospects for business development and employment. It has an excellent health care scheme available to all citizens. Furthermore, it is considered to be one of the best educated countries in the world. There are many fine private and public schools. The country has in fact taken steps to boost immigration. The reason is to make sure that projected plans for economic growth materialize. The government is hoping that, by the end of 2010, as many as 250,000 immigrants will have settled in the country. With this boost of skilled workers, Canada is expected to grow rapidly and recover swiftly from the economic downturn. The government has virtually given free reign to provinces. Within reason, each is able to determine how many new skilled people it requires. One province that is making great efforts is Quebec with its Skilled Worker Program. This is designed to offer new residents a hassle free transition. Therefore, Quebec essentially has its own immigration policy. It has formulated a set of immigration criteria that do not have to conform to national requirements. As such, any person who has already unsuccessfully applied for a Canadian Skilled Work visa may make application to Quebec. There are some national requirements that are standard throughout Canada. You have to be classified as ’skilled labor’. This will enable you to be easily integrated into the job market. You must also be able to understand French, and speak English fluently. If you are in a highly skilled profession, your application is likely to be prioritized. If you have family with Canadian citizenship, or family who are permanent residents, this will help your cause. In addition, if you are married and your spouse has family ties in the country, this will also helpful. Most important of all, you will need to have a written job offer from a licensed business in Canada. Seeking out immigration consultants is easy online. It would be best to find one who is well versed with all the immigration criteria in Canada and its provinces. By hiring such a person, you could save expenses and lengthy waiting periods. Context Sensitive Reporting Vital to the adoption of any system is that you make the system as easy to use and as relevant to the end user as possible. Tools like Atlantic Global OnDemand achieve this by offering context sensitive reports. Context sensitive reports enable users to run a report with a single click from any screen in the application without having to specify any filter criteria. For example, a user can easily run a timesheet detail or utilisation report directly from the timesheet entry screen. This functionality enables us to provide each user with access to their most commonly used reports directly from the views they use the most. Dashboard Reporting Atlantic Global OnDemand’s ability to provide access to reports directly from dashboards is another example of improving the ease of use and access to data. For example, a project manager has quick access, directly from their project status dashboard, to all project management based reports. This means you are able to provide a user with access to all of the status information from one single entry point to the system via the dashboard. The user can then access all views and reports they required for their role in the organisation. By keeping them hidden from any irrelevant functionality it makes it far easier to train people to use the system and to provide them with focus on the information they should be maintaining & updating. Another key aspect of Atlantic Global OnDemand is that it allows each user to print selected dashboard elements, meaning status reports can easily be produced with a single click. Custom Report Writer To support all of your reporting needs it is essential that your time and expense management solution provides you with the ability to generate your own ad hoc reports to cover any additional reporting requirements which are not met by the standard reports provided with the application. For ease of use, the report writer should provide the user with a graphical user interface that does not require the use of any coding languages. The report writer should also provide the ability to generate text, column, cross-tab and graphical reports. Solutions like Atlantic Global OnDemand also offer the ability to clone and manipulate the standard reports in order to add additional fields or filtering options to meet your individual reporting needs. With SaaS solutions, a strong user community and product road map also means that these type of systems offer the ability to load or import additional report definitions enabling you to constantly extend your system reporting capabilities. Export Reports The ability to export data so that you can use and manipulate it in other systems is the final aspect of reporting that your solution should offer. In order to make this possible, you should be able to export data directly from reports in common data formats such as MS Excel, XML, PDF and HTML.
